Lodge Evaluation: The Fortress at Edgehill, Banbury, Oxfordshire

The day we headed for the Fortress on Edgehill it was a squally, stormy evening that didn’t abate that day or a lot of the following. But after we approached the fortress it was a joyous second. We sat within the automotive for a protracted second to admire the curves of the fortress whose stature is sufficiently small to be referred to as a folly.

At evening, when the storm subsided, the sky was clear and the fortress appeared stunning lit up in opposition to an indigo sky. Though there’s lodging, it’s the restaurant that offers it its attract. And the bar too with its cosy atmosphere and leather-based sofas. Get there on a transparent day and the beer backyard might be in bloom and the views over the Warwickshire countryside are relatively stunning.

Humour on their discover board

The constructing was designed by English pioneer Sanderson Miller (1716-1780). He’s most recognized for a penchant for follies and different fairly backyard buildings and certainly the Octoganal tower now often called The Fortress at Edgehill. It’s on the spot the place the primary main battle of the English Civil Warfare passed off that grew to become the turning level in English historical past.

Hook Norton Brewery took it over in 1922 and refurbished it a number of years in the past providing 5 en-suite bedrooms. It’s a small fortress, sufficiently small to be a folly however.. not too small to have a cheeky sense of humour and certainly to be haunted.

We heard some jangling within the evening and obscure noises and we did marvel. Seems that there’s certainly a resident ethereal visitor. They name her Edith.

Who for:

Anybody who fancies scrumptious meals and an evening on the Inn.

Lodging:

There are simply 5 rooms of varied sizes. A pair with four-poster beds. Two of the rooms, ‘Prince Rupert’ and ‘Kings’ are located in the principle tower and have one of the best views of the Warwickshire countryside.

Ours was the Cromwell suite which takes up the entire first flooring and is sort of the dimensions of a small flat. It has a big sitting room with a 52 inch Flat Display screen TV and spacious bed room and a spacious toilet with Gothic model home windows. The toilet comes with a bathe as do all of the rooms and on the nights we stayed – albeit chilly stormy nights – the lavatory was chilly. However, the bed room was comfy.  The hues of the decor have been understated save a vivid purple Coca Cola fridge which appear incongruous, within the bed room, and a positive wood-panelled ceiling within the lounge.

Meals and Drink:

The doorway results in the bar and the lounge. It’s very cosy. Drink by the bar or on a comfortable couch within the lounge. There are two eating areas. One in a conventional eating room and the opposite an area with flooring to ceiling home windows giving technique to views over the countryside. We opted for the second space each for dinner and breakfast. The menu each for dinner and breakfast is proscribed however the meals was implausible – we significantly loved the steak. There’s a beer backyard too preferrred for sunny days.

Services

The Fortress on Edgehill is primarily a restaurant with rooms and so there are not any amenities as such save without cost wi-fi. Nevertheless, there’s a implausible gin faculty – the Pinnock Distillery. Right here I distilled my very own gin selecting my botanicals to provide attractive nectar which I bottled and took away. See our full assessment of the Fortress Gin Faculty right here.

How a lot:

Doubles begin £91 per evening. The Cromwell Superior Suite from £136 per evening. Tariff contains breakfast.

The area can also be residence to manufacturing crops of  Jaguar Land Rover and Aston Martin so it’s apt that round 10 minutes drive will get you to the British Motor Museum.. bringing the historical past of the British motor trade to life.

Verdict: It is a delightfully cute fortress. If you’re passing by the realm for an evening and wish a spot to put your head after a superb boozy meal and environment to stroll it off the following day, The Fortress at Edgehill is good.
